IN PRACTICE

What happens around a release?

With APIRecap

  1. Connect once. Add a publishing key to your CI or deployment workflow and point it at the project and API you want to update.
  2. Publish after deployment. Send the OpenAPI or Markdown file once production succeeds. The new document becomes current, while retained versions keep their own links.
  3. Explain the release. Review detected changes and approve a client-facing note. Confirmed subscribers receive an alert after that first approval.

With Scalar

  1. Bring an OpenAPI definition into Scalar Docs or its API reference and configure the site.
  2. Publish reference updates and authored content in the docs workflow.
  3. Maintain changelog or announcement content as part of that site, and choose how to notify clients.

GO DEEPER

The differences that affect your decision.

01

The renderer is shared; the release record is added

APIRecap uses Scalar to render its OpenAPI reference. Around it, APIRecap keeps each accepted document version, detects changes, stores a reviewed note and sends approved release alerts. Choose it when clients need a traceable account of each production release.

02

Where Scalar is a better fit

Choose Scalar for an interactive API client, SDK generation, MCP servers or a wider developer portal. Its free hosted reference may cover your needs without a paid plan.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you choose.

Can readers test API requests?

In Scalar, yes. APIRecap disables browser-based live requests; readers can browse the reference, inspect source documents and compare retained versions.

Can Scalar publish versions automatically?

Yes. Pro includes version deploys and Git Sync. Automated publishing alone is not a reason to switch.

Can we use both?

Yes. Keep a Scalar portal and publish your OpenAPI or Markdown source to APIRecap for client release records. APIRecap does not import a complete Scalar site.
